The Precis Guide to Petite Dresses
At under 5ft 3, it’s easy for petite women to feel overlooked. We here at Precis celebrate your height and are thrilled by the fact that we can offer you clothes and accessories which are specifically tailored to your shape. We love passing on top tips for dressing well too, and one of the best looks for us petite ladies is a petite dress – which is great news as they are all over the catwalks for spring/summer. Here are our top tips for how to wear dresses if you are petite.
Petite Maxi Dresses
Petite maxi dresses are bang on trend again for spring/summer this year, and look like they are continuing to be stylish into autumn/winter too. A lot of Petite ladies worry whether they can wear maxi dresses, and the answer is yes, we just have to pick our shapes carefully. Firstly, make sure the dress isn’t too long – either get it taken up by a seamstress, or buy one specifically designed for petites like those available at précis.co.uk. Always choose a style which is well cut, and hangs close to the body especially at the top – anything too loose runs the risk of looking like a tent! Try a maxi dress with an empire waist, and then wrap a thin belt around the smallest part of your waist to really emphasize it. However, saying that if the dress you like has a looser fit, then don’t fret, just pair it with a denim or cotton waistcoat, which looks cute and still gives a fitted look. Twist front maxi dresses are flattering too – accentuating your shape further.
Petite workwear dresses
For petite workwear dresses, a tailored shift is your best bet as it will gently skim the body and not swamp you. Go for one in a jersey fabric to ensure comfort all day long, especially if sitting. Again, a twist front detail is great as it draws attention to the waist, and adds a point of interest. Plain colours are good, but why not liven things up and go for a print? Smaller prints tend to work best all over, or you could go for a larger print just down one side – a trick to draw the eye downwards and elongate the body. The great thing about shift dresses too is that they are really versatile – wear them on their own, or layer them with thin knit tees or blouses and cardigans or jackets. Cover your legs up with tights or leggings and boots, or killer heels, or wedges - the possibilities are endless.
Eveningwear
For night-time why not try a glamorous maxi dress (as discussed previously) or go for the eternal classic – a LBD (Little Black Dress)? A wrap front dress with a slight A-line skirt would look wonderful, and could be accessorised with pops of colour using slim belts, clutch bags and shoes. The other option is a slim fitting shift style, with a contrast colour at the waistline to draw the eye in. The main point is to keep the silhouette streamlined. Dresses which hit on the knee or above are the most flattering as they help to make your legs look long and lean. V-necks are also a great style detail for petite ladies, as this neckline draws the eye up and down – they also show off your neck giving the illusion of a long, lean neckline.
